Bridgestone Tire Manufacturing Vietnam shifting to 100% renewable biomass energy for steam use
• Bridgestone Tire Manufacturing Vietnam– the Bridgestone factory situated in Hai Phong - plans to achieve 100% renewable energy from biomass towards steam use in production by November 2023.

Hai Phong (September 27, 2023) — Bridgestone Tire Manufacturing Vietnam Limited Liability Company (BTMV) has officially announced that its factory will transition to 100% renewable energy for steam use generated from biomass. The factory will gradually switch from liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to biomass energy, with the transition expected to be completed by November 2023.

Fully committed to environmental sustainability goals, BTMV has inaugurated a Biomass Steam System and aims to integrate a 10-ton/hr Biomass Boiler. The Biomass Steam System reduces CO2 emissions by approximately 92%*1 compared to those of the LPG Boiler. By adopting 100% biomass energy, BTMV has demonstrated its commitment to environmental sustainability goals. This transition supports the Bridgestone Group’s global objective of achieving a 50% reduction in CO2 emissions (Scope 1 and 2) by 2030 compared to 2011 levels and aligns with the Government of Vietnam’s National Climate Change Strategy, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in accordance with the roadmap up to 2050.
By promoting the use of renewable energy sources, BTMV seeks to realize the value of “Energy: Committed to the realization of a carbon neutral mobility society” and "Ecology: Committed to advancing sustainable tire technologies and solutions that preserve the environment for future generations” in our corporate commitment Bridgestone E8 Commitment*2 announced in 2022.
Biomass energy is generated through combustion fueled by materials such as rice husk or wood chips. These materials release stored energy as heat through the process of photosynthesis, providing renewable energy without adding CO2 to the atmosphere. This makes biomass energy a sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional fossil fuels.
Mr. Nobuharu Shiina, General Director of BTMV, emphasizes the shared vision of achieving a “greener tire” for a “cleaner life”. He says, “BTMV is making steady progress toward realizing a carbon-neutral society based on the Bridgestone E8 commitment. In order to make tire manufacturing more sustainable, we have realized green energy using biomass this time. By maximizing other green energies, we will continue striving to reduce CO2 emissions by 2030 and promote material circularity as we work toward realizing a sustainable society.”
As an agricultural country, Vietnam has abundant sources of biomass energy materials, with more than 160 million tons of biomass available each year from the cultivation industry, including straw, bagasse, and rice husks. However, there are challenges revolving around the seasonal fluctuation of material prices, the need for investment capital, and skilled workers in biofuel projects. Despite the challenges, BTMV remains committed to maximizing the use of biomass energy, aligning with the government’s support for biomass in manufacturing.

Bridgestone Group's 2030 Long Term Strategic Aspiration*4 also describes its efforts to promote the Green & Smart factory. Specially, Bridgestone seeks to source more than 50% of its energy (electricity) from renewable energy by 2023 and strive to achieve approximately 100% renewable energy (electricity) by 2030.
